Evidence: NDC Releases Full List of 123 Senior High Schools Under Construction by Mahama Ghana

The governing National
Democratic Congress (NDC)
recently released a compilation
of the 123 Senior High Schools
the Mahama-led administration
is constructing across the
country as a proof to debunk
claims that they are lying to
Ghanaians. The NDC, prior to the 2012
elections, promised to construct
200 free Community Senior
High Schools in the country if
voted into power. However, at
the end of the first four years of
leadership, President Mahama
has only succeeded in
completing and commissioning
only 10 out of the 200 proposed
schools.
The opposition New Patriotic
Party has been using this ugly
development as a major point of
harsh criticism against the
ruling party. In response to the
various criticisms, the
government pointed out that
there are other 123 SHS under
construction in various regions.
Many Ghanaians however, have
described the NDC’s claims as
blatant lies, asking the party to
provide the people with
evidences. It is in response to
this that the NDC released a full
list of the 123 SHS they say are
at different stages of
construction. See list below.

FG Cannot Pay The N248 Billion Demanded By ASUU Due To Recession - Minister

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige
has stated that efforts to resolve the crisis between
ASUU and the Federal Government was stalled due
to the fact that the union is demanding N248 Billion
as payment for earned allowance.
He mentioned that among the 8 demands presented
by ASUU, it is only the issue of earned allowance
that is still unresolved.
According to him, the Federal Government will not
be able to cough out such an amount of money at
the moment considering that the economy of the
nation is currently in recession.
He further stated that the government proposed to
be paying a certain amount to ASUU on a monthly
basis pending when the first tranche of money
earlier disbursed to ASUU for that purpose will be
audited.
However, ASUU brought up a counter proposal
which made the two parties to retreat to allow
further consultations after which they will
reconvene to continue negotiation and hopefully

  1. resolve the issue.

Millions Of Ghanaians To Get Free Access To Online Learning Materials

In an initiative to transform the concept
of teaching and learning in Ghana, the
Vodafone Foundation has introduced a
zero-rated Vodafone Instant Classroom
project.
The project, which is a group-wide
initiative to provide millions of people in
Ghana, the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique
and Tanzania with free access to online
learning materials was developed in
conjunction with Learning Equality’ – a
leading non-profit provider of open-
source educational technology solutions, and the
Khan Academy.
During a ceremony to demonstrate how the instant
classroom works at the Vodafone Airport City
Office, Yolanda Cuba, Chief Executive Officer (CEO),
Vodafone Ghana noted that the world has evolved in
all aspects of life.
“The advent of technology and digitisation has
changed everything and has certainly changed
education.
“Every piece of learning under the sun can now be
assessed with just a click of the button. Now
students can acquire skills exclusively online
before they even interact with a teacher.”
“Which is why Vodafone is committed to creating a
platform that will help students in the country take
advantage of the times and compete on the same
level as their counterparts in the developed
countries.
Speaking on the Instant school, Yolanda said it was
necessary to have the instant classroom project
because not every parent in Ghana could afford
extra classes for the child.
According to Yolanda, the instant classroom project
is a cost-effective alternative avenue being adopted
by Vodafone Foundation to digitally touch the lives
of every youth in the country.
On his part, the Corporate Communications
Manager, Ebenezer Amankwah said there were
generic subjects on the platform that anyone across
the globe could access for basic information on
subjects.
“We have partnered the Ghana Education Service to
have a localised Ghana curriculum on the platform
from February next year, then it becomes a twofold
opportunity for you to get information on any area
and a local curriculum as well.”
Mr Amankwah noted how powerful education was,
in driving a nation forward and how it has come to
mean many things for different people the world
over.
“We are happy that as Vodafone we are powering
this agenda of digitalising the whole Ghana. If we are
in a world that is digitalised as we speak, then we
should leave no one behind”, he added.
Vodafone is determined to contribute to enhancing
the learning experience for students – to give them
a smile on their faces by making teaching and
learning a memorable experience.

Presbyterian University Graduates 661 Students

661 students have graduated from the
Presbyterian University College, Ghana
(PUCG) for the year 2016 at a ceremony at
its Okwahu Campus. The University which
is accredited to the National Accreditation Board is
affiliated to University of Ghana, University of Cape
Coast and the Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and Technology.
The students who graduated from the following
degree programmes: Business Administration,
Business Economics, Agribusiness, Rural and
Community Development, Environmental and
Natural Resources Management, ICT, Mathematics,
Nursing and Physician Assistantship comprised 352
males and 309 females.
55 students of the total number of graduating
students got First Class Honours (39 males and 16
females); Second Class Upper Division: 289
students (142 males and 147 females); Second
Class Lower division: 217 students (116 males and
101 females)
There were 18 awards for some of the graduating
students for excellent performance. Out of this

Financial Challenges to Private Universities
The President, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Adow Obeng
noted that the financial distress of the private
universities is compounded by the payment of huge
sums of monies to Mentoring Institutions and
Regulatory bodies.
He said the affiliation charges of the Mentoring
Institution and the accreditation fees of the
Regulatory body are too high that very little is left
for infrastructural development, faculty and staff
development and training, libraries, attraction and
retention of staff and research.
The President of PUCG posited that operating a
tertiary institution is an expensive enterprise.
“There is the need for the existing private
universities to think of mergers-the merger of
common minded universities or universities with
same historical roots are to merge to ensure their
survival”.
Government Policies
Rev. Prof. E. Adow Obeng appealed to the National
Accreditation Board to put a cap on the
establishment of new private universities to enable
the already established private universities to
survive and improve on their delivery, except those
to be set up in the areas of science, technology,
health and medical sciences.
The PUCG President implored the Government to
review its policy on taxing private universities.  I
pray that some political party will make this an item
in its manifesto-No tax for private universities.
“The killer to these all is the payment of tax, on
non-existent profits, at the end of the financial year
to the taxman”, he bemoan the situation.
The policy of non-employment of graduate nurses
by government health institutions poses a problem
especially to private universities many of which
have Departments of Nursing. In fact, this policy is
affecting admissions into these departments.
He said there are many vacancies in the health
sector than the number of graduates coming out of
the Departments of Nursing in the country. “What is
the need for this policy? We call on government to
reverse this policy”, he questioned.
University programmes
The President informed the congregation about
PUCG receiving accreditation for two new
programmes in Education – Bachelor of Education
(Business Studies) and Bachelor of Education
(Social Studies) – and said these two departments
are the foundation departments of the Faculty of
Education.
Academic programmes that have been developed
by the University to commence soon are MA in
International Development, MED in Educational
Studies, MSc in Environmental Health and
Sanitation, and MSc in Natural Resources
Management.
The others are MSc in Forensic Audit and
Investigation, MSc in Financial Risk Management
and MA in Public Relations and Corporate
Communications BSc. Actuarial Science, BSc.
Optometry, Law, and BSc. Midwifery.
Ms. Emily Asaa Addison, a BSc. Mathematics
student of the Faculty of Science and Technology
was adjudged the Overall Best Student. She also
received the Overall Best Female Graduating
Student and Faculty Best Student Awards.
Addressing the Congregation, the President of
PUCG, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Adow Obeng thanked
the parents and guardians and said “It is your
confidence in us, three or four years ago to entrust
your sons, daughters and wards to us for training
that has resulted in today’s ceremony”.
He was confident that the graduands will excel in
life because the University has invested a lot in
Christian moral values and excellent academic
teaching in their training to ensure that they indeed
become agents of transformation in the Ghanaian
society and the world at large.

Ghanaian Scholarship Students In Russia Forced to Become Cleaners!

Ghanaian scholarship students
in Russia have been forced into
menial jobs such as hostels and
snow cleaning in their struggle
to survive
Reports from 3News reveal that
Ghanaian students on
government scholarship in
Russia have not been receiving
their bursaries. This has
resulted to their being turned
out of hostels due to failure to
pay their accommodation fees.
Each of the students is entitled
to a quarterly allowance of 900
dollars for their upkeep. They
are also entitled to a yearly
allowance of 560 dollars each
for books, health insurance and
accommodation and other
expenditure. But the students say their grant
for the last quarter of 2016
[October, November,
December] which was
supposed to have been paid at
the start of the academic year,
have not yet been released by
the government. According to
them, this has left so many of
them stranded as they are
unable to meet up with the
payment of their
accommodation fees; a
situation that has made the
school to send them packing
from their hostels. It was also
reported that some of the
students risk deportation if they
do not find money to renew
their visas.
As a result of this, some of the
affected students have been
forced to do menial jobs to earn
little money to sustain
themselves. While some
have taken to cleaning hostels
in exchange of accommodation,
others engage in snow
cleaning.There are also those perching
with non – scholarship students
and Ghanaian residents in
Russia, making access to their
campus a challenge due to cost
of transportation. 3News
gathered from Abdul Kadir, one
of the Ghanaian scholarship
students in Russia, that over
200 students are at risk of
catching cold as they trek daily
under unfavourable weather
conditions to campus.
Abdul also revealed that 39
fresh scholarship students who
arrived in Russia from Ghana
on November 14 with the hope
of receiving stipends for their
hostels, medical insurance,
winter clothing, academic
documentation have also been
left stranded.
He went further to explain that it
took a threat of demonstration
to receive their 4th quarter
stipends in February 2016 – the
one they suppose to have
received in October 2015. He
therefore indicated that there is
no need to wait till February
2017, but to start now to push
the government to pay
the grants as early as possible.
The students are afraid that
after elections, structural
changes in either the new or the
existing government will delay
the allowances even
further. They said attempts by
fresh students to get financial
assistance from home have
been unfruitful as monies
borrowed by parents for their
flight are yet to be paid.
Meanwhile, several attempts to
speak to registrar of the
scholarship secretariat Fuseini
Lansah has proved futile.
According to NUGS Russia, they
petitioned Vice President Paa
Kwesi Amissah Arthur to fast
track the release of students’
bursaries when he attended the
St. Petersburg International
Forum in June but are yet to
receive a favourable response.
It is good that the Ghanaian
scholarship students in Russia
are acquainted with happenings
in the country as regards
government’s payment of
students’ allowances . This will
make them to be aware that
they are not alone in the
unpleasant situation.
